Several years before she passed away, my grandmother gifted me a cookbook in which she transcribed several dozen of her favorite recipes from her thousands of index cards.
You have to read the recipes in their entirety before you begin cooking, because ingredients are sprinkled throughout, and specific directions often snake around the recipe pages in my grandmother’s scrawl. She included notes such as “is good for a picnic or large crowd” and “everyone always asks for this recipe.”
There are recipes for two different Better than Sex Cakes and multiple egg casseroles all “good for Bible study,” but my favorite recipe is the molasses cookies, which we make every Christmas. Eating them always takes me back to visiting my grandmother’s home in Minnesota.
